After about 2 weeks on Chantix, I began to experience severe fatigue and headaches. When I went to my doctor, they discovered I had mononucleosis! Being 41 yrs old and married, I am at very low risk to develop this. Wondering if maybe this drug could have lowered my immune system and made me susceptible??? Anybody else developed weird illnesses while on it?
How is mono passed?
Mono is not spread as easily as some other viruses, such as the common cold. The mono virus is found in saliva and mucus. It is usually passed from one person to another through kissing, although it may rarely be passed in other ways, such as coughing. Signs of mono usually develop 4 to 6 weeks after you're exposed to the virus. Generally, people only get mono once. It's most common among people 15 to 35 years old.
I too tried to commit sucide on July26,2007 after stoping chantix.I used to think how do people get to that point in there mind to actually do that but I was 100% ready, I saw a news report on abc yesterday about it and I will tell you It makes sences to me now.I am dealing with recovering from that and would say to any one do not try chantix...
Dear Anonymous,
I have a similar story however it was not me that attempted suicide it was my little sister. She has always been a very vibrant, happy, funny, free spirited person with the heart of an angel. She started Chantix in February and tried again in April...she attempted to take her life on October 2nd, 2007. She is absolutely devastated because of this. She has no memory of the incident which is making it even harder for her to heal. She has said over and over that she is not suicidal, she loves her life and does not want to die and has no reason for doing this. There is no history of mental illness in our family and she has never been depressed in the past. We have filed a complaint with the FDA in reference to this medication. We have also contacted an attorney and found that there are others out there that are complaining of the exact same side effects. I suggest that everyone that has the following side effects do the same thing:
uncontrollable rage, uncontrollable crying, severe mood swings with no trigger, increased alcohol consumption, difficulty concentrating, loss of interest at work, home and hobbies, depression, suicidal ideation and attempted suicide.
I have successfully quit with Chantix, and link to other people who have done that as well on my blog at http://chantixquit.blogspot.com
First let me say I am sorry for those who have had suicidal tendancies or actually followed through with it. How tragic. However I for one do not fully believe that Chanitx is to blame for that. I successfully quit smoking with Chantix therapy. Started it in February of this year, took Chantix for 4 months, and have been smoke free the entire time, now over 8 months! I was truly addicted, smoked 2 packs a day for over 30 years. Tried other things and none ever worked. I truly believe its a mind set and you have to really be ready to quit for it to work. While I applaud Chantix in helping me and many others to quit, its by no means a "miracle drug", heck, no nicotine in it at all! WE did ourselves. Me, I did it. Under a doctors supervision, I highly recommend Chantix!
It angers me greatly to hear those who have had no side effects say it's just a 'mind set'. Chantix acts on receptors in the brain. Just because you were fine and dandy on it, it doesn't follow that others will have the same experience.
I am a strong person. I have faced much stress and adversity in my life. I have come through it all, unaided. I took Chantix and two months in my whole world fell apart. I was paranoid, cripplingly anxious, depressed. I had panic attacks. The only other time in my life I've had a panic attack was when I was on Zyban. I didn't link the chantix with how I was feeling. But I can assure you, the fact that I had a young child was the only thing stopping me from killing myself. I lost the man I loved because I became a mad woman. I was irrational, demanding one minute, withdrawn the next.
I went to hell and back. It was not a mind set, and don't you dare insult the intelligence and experiences of those of us who have had side effects that drove us to the very edge of hell.
This is my third week on chantix. The only effect I have had is disturbed sleep, if I take the evening pill after 6pm, a little bit of nausea in the morning, and that is it. It seems to take my mind off of smoking, I am down to 1-2 a day, from a pack to a pack and a half a day 2 weeks ago. I have heard of side effects from all of the pills, wellbutrin, zyban, the patch, and I agree, I think it is the person taking it, and it very well can be in the "mind", everyone is different.
Just my opinion.
I began taking Chantix in the beginning of March. (was on it only 3 wks) I suffered TERRIBLE headaches and stopped taking it for that reason, however, I am now able to see (with a clear mind) how much it altered my mood. I was extremely irritable, could not concentrate at work, became depressed, aggitated with my kids. This is not my normal behavior! I have never suffered from depression and am generally a happy person. I can't say that any of these changes were from not smoking, since I was only able to cut down and did not completely quit. I applaud those who can take this and successfully quit, but can relate to those who have felt suicidal, though I didn't get to that stage, I can't say with 100% certainty that I would not have had I continued on it.
