Dr Howell

I started taking Chantix January 28th. I have been off cigarettes for almost 2 months now. It is fantastic.
I do have the nausea and problems sleeping, but that is something that can be handled.
I do have a question though regarding menses. I have not had one since January. Is this a common side effect? I did not read it on any of the materials I received with the prescription.
I did take a pregnancy test since one of the restrictions is not to be pregnant since it has not been studied in pregnant women. The test came back negative.
Any information you could give me would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance

I have been on chantix for 2 1/2 weeks.Am 50 yrs old and smoked for 35 years and have been cigarette free for over a week now.HOWEVER,after being in full menopause for about 5 years I find I am spotting and a bit of cramping so far today. In the patient info sheet it says menstrual disorders are frequent, so I am asking can it cause THIS?? Have been very happy not having periods!! DANG!

Regarding menstruation the Chantix product insert describes:
REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM AND BREAST DISORDERS. Frequent: Menstrual disorder.
Infrequent: Erectile dysfunction. Rare: Sexual dysfunction.

"Menstrual disorders" is such a broad term that it is hard to know what is meant by it. I would suggest erring on the side of caution and seeking advice from your own gynecological physician.

Bleeding after achieving menopause (cessation of menses for at least 12 months) is commonly something that you should check-out just to rule-out anything serious.

If you are pre-menopausal you should assume that a cessation of menses should mean pregnancy until proven otherwise.

I seem to have resumed a regular 28-day cycle.
    I'm 49 and thought I was done!
I thought I was in full menopause as I hadn't had a period in 18 months. I'd had the full range of symptoms - hot flashes, night sweats, everything.
After 3 months of Chantix and struggling with the quitting, I finally quit. About a week later, I got a period - breast tenderness, bloating, crying, everything.
Now, 28 days later, another one with breast tenderness, crying, bloating, everything.
The flashes and night sweats are gone.
I'm calling my doctor tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure this isn't pathological. Not at 28 days with full symptoms.

This is the only thing on the web that makes some sort of connection to quitting smoking.

    Thank you.
I am calling my doctor tomorrow.
